On the Horizon – VMworld Europe 2014

By | September 11, 2014

As the dust settles from VMworld US 2014 in San Francisco, the realisation that VMworld Europe in Barcelona is fast approaching like a Japanese bullet train!  As I write this post, it’s around one month away.  After all the excitement and announcements from the event in San Francisco, there’s a wealth of information around VMware’s new technology and strategy to digest.  Personally, I haven’t yet caught up with everything, however I’m really looking forward to attending the Europe event for the 1st time and getting stuck into all the information and announcements!

No Limits2

I’m very pleased VMware decided to offer me a blogger pass for this year.  In addition to receiving VMware vExpert for the first time, following 9 months of opening my blog, I’m honoured and delighted VMware have recognised my commitment and efforts within the community.  So I’d like to pass on my thanks to the VMware Social Media team including Amanda Ballard.

Onto the event, hopefully there’ll be some additional shiny new announcements in addition to the US show, there’s always things that trickle their way into the Europe show.  At this point, I have no idea of any, and I actually prefer to keep away from the whispers among the community, preferring the build up to the General Sessions and news hitting you at that point!

Logistically, it will be interesting how the Europe show differs from VMworld US, which I attended in 2012 and 2013, but couldn’t make the commitment this year due to personal circumstances.  I’ll feed this back into my blog after the show for comparison.

Networking opportunities are vast at VMworld, from the Hang Space, vBrownbag Tech sessions, vendor and community parties, Solutions Exchange or VMworld party and just about everywhere.  Be sure to engage with folks, exchange ideas, business cards and maybe swap some swag!  You may even need additional baggage to ship all the goodies home with you!  Solutions Exchange is a gold mine for this stuff.

Personally  I’ll be focusing on selected areas at this year’s show.  With the ever expanding portfolio, it’s nearly impossible to focus on ALL areas (well for me!).  Since I’m more focused and interested in the datacentre side (sorry, SDDC now) and EUC, this will be my target around the breakout sessions, Solutions Exchange and Hands on Labs.

I’m particularly excited and keen to learn more on the new hyper convergence appliance EVO: Rail, VVOLs, plus Horizon and AirWatch integration.  I’m also looking to brush up on NSX as I’ve had little chance so far to begin my Network Virtualisation journey, I’m certainly targeting the recently released VCP-NV certification in the very near future.

I’ll be posting summary notes on here from the breakout sessions I attend (these may not be in real time, but I’ll post ASAP), so stay tuned!

The Hands On Labs and Breakout sessions are all available for attendees online a few weeks after the show, so it’s not a big deal if you can’t make the sessions for some reason.

From my past two experiences at VMworld, it’s an awesome week and really gives you extra buzz\spring\passion (if needed?) for the present and future.

Haven’t you registered for VMworld Europe 2014?  Why don’t you join the excitement and be part of the event?  You really won’t regret it, I’m certain of that.
